This was a lot of fun, though I was
surprised how little information the internet had for me. Not sure why I was
surprised, but surely someone has done this before me.
Kryptonians
Kryptonians have the most well known naming
conventions that I can find. You probably know the basics.
Male names are 1-2 syllables(usually one)
followed by a hyphen and the father's 1 syllable family name.
Female names are 2-3 syllables(rarely 1,
usually ending in a vowel, often an 'a') followed by the father's full name.
Examples:
Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van -> son is Kal-El
Zor-El and Alura In-Ze -> daughter is
Kara Zor-El
Other Examples:
Dru-Zod
Xa-Du
Val-Ty
Hatu-El
Faora Hu-Ul
Asha Del-Nar
Fedra Shu-El
Tes Ak-Var
Tamaraneans
We know very little about the Tamaranean
language, or about Tamaranean names.
They seem to have a single name. Most seem
to be between 2-4 syllables. It's possible that children are given the same
final syllable as one of their parents, but this may be restricted to the royal
family, or just be personal preference for Koriand'r's parents.
Example:
Myand'r and Luand'r -> daughters are
Koriand'r and Komand'r and son is Ryand'r
Other Examples:
Karras
Ph'yzzon
Zirral
Alisand'r
Oleand'r
Taryia
Thanagarians
Thanagarians have 2 names, each with 1-2
syllables. Children take their father's 2nd name as their 1st,
his 1st name as their 2nd, or either name in it's
original position. It's unknown if this is personal preference for the parents,
or just sloppy writing on the authors' parts.
Examples:
Brothers Andar Nal and Andar Pul
Andar Nal -> son is Fel Andar
Fel Andar -> son is Ch'al Andar
Thal Porvis -> daughter is Shayera Thal
(Andar Pul) and Shayera Thal(in wedlock)
-> Shayera Thal
Paran Katar -> son is Katar Hol
Other Examples:
Isamot Kol
Onimar Synn
Byth Rok
Zihn Tarak
Darl Klus
Tarra Karn
Corla Tavo
Additional Points:
Sr'i -> Sir or Mr.
Shr'i -> Mrs. or Miss
Rannians
Most Rannians are sterile. This may be why
we know very little about how they name their children. They can have1-2 names,
which seem to be between 1-3 syllables each.
Examples:
Sardath and Bantteir -> daughter is
Alanna
Adam Strange(Human) and Alanna ->
daughter is Aleea Strange
Other Examples:
Vath Sarn
Delaken
Alva Xar
Krent
Kaskor
Mortan
Xaltan Torr
Oran Dargg
Navelo
Qanda
Marleah
Korugarans
Not even sure why I included the
Korugarans, we know so little about them. They seemed cool?
Examples:
Dgibb and Karoll Natu -> adopted
daughter is Soranik Natu
Other Examples:
Thaal Sinestro
Katma Tui
Ungarans
Both sexes seem to take their father's
family name.
Examples:
Brother and Sister Abin Sur and Arin Sur
Abin Sur -> son is Amon Sur
White/Green Martians
White and Green Martians seem to use
similar naming conventions. 1-2 names, 2nd name may be a family
name. It's possible this name is adopted by the wife at marriage. Each name is
1-2 syllables(rarely 3-4, Ma'alefa'ak seems to have been named differently,
possibly because they hated him?). After the 1st syllable(rarely the
2nd) or the 1st letter there is an apostrophe. It's
unknown how this affects pronunciation.
Examples:
M'yrnn J'onzz and Sha'sheen J'onzz ->
sons are J'onn J'onzz and Ma'alefa'ak J'onzz
J'onn J'onzz and M'yri'ah J'onzz ->
daughter is K'hym J'onzz
D'all -> M'yri'ah(possible surname)
Mica'kel -> son is Till'all
Other Examples:
A'monn A'mokk
Roh'kar
Sy'rann
Dal'en
Telok'telar
A'morr
M'gann M'orzz
D'Kay D'Razz
Cay'an
J'en
Bel Juz
Reach
All the Reach we've seen (with the
exception of Dawur) are called by a title and serial number. Dawur is a
general, and may be above title/serial no. naming.
Negotiators (Diplomats) - called by title Negotiator
Infiltrators (Spies/Secret Agents) – title is Khaji
Enforcers (Soldiers)– title is Djo
Examples:
Khaji Dha
Khaji Tal
Khaji Eq
Djo Dje
Djo Sut
Djo Mek
